Eternal Sunshine goes where other romance films haven’t been brave enough to venture before. It not only explores the budding relationship of two people, but also incorporates aspects of science fiction and a psychological thriller, to bring together an enthralling story.

The comedy-drama delves into the relationship between Joel (Jim Carey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet), an estranged couple who both have their memories erased. The nonlinear timeline shows them trying to find each other’s mindsets to fall in love again and to remember each other.

With impeccable acting on both parts, Jim Carey here takes a turn from his usual goofy self to a more grounded and serious performance, which is complimented by Winslet, also out of her comfort zone here playing aw wild young woman in search for love.

From flicking between current day and dream like events the film takes the viewer on a journey through both character’s relationships and minds, in search of their lost love.

Weird and wonderful, a true depiction of a modern day budding relationship, and a romantic adventure like no other. 165

Eternal Sunshine sets itself apart from a lot of other romance films by incorporating more dynamic issues. It focusses on all stages of relationships in a true light but also adds in themes related to psychological thrillers. It does confuse a lot of viewers though.
